"My wish is coming true." Daniel muttered in a low voice.
"What wish?"
Daniel put a finger to his mouth to gesture silence. "It's a secret."
"Oh, reminding me of secrets, I forgot I got another gift in my car." Steven stood up and jogged out the room. The front door was heard being opened and less than thirty seconds later, it shut again and Steven reappeared with a brown envelope in hand. Daniel made to reach for it but Steven held it. "This gift, Mommy will open it." And he extended the envelope to Angela.
"Me?" Angela expressed her surprise.
Steven nodded affirmatively. "Open it."
With shaky fingers, Angela accepted the envelope, lifted open the unsealed flap and fished out the small stack of neat papers. She only needed to read the bold words on top of the first paper to know the rest of the contents. Those were the legal documents to make Daniel his son.
Steven's lips twitched into a hopeful, even encouraging, smile. "No more secrets about who I truly am and who Daniel truly is. All that's left is your signature on the dotted line."
Angela flipped to the last page of the papers. The first line on the bottom of the page, Steven's line, it was already signed. And it was all Angela needed to read from the long text. All she needed to see was the names, hers and Steven's, and their title, mother and father. All she wanted was to give Daniel his father. An even greater gift to Daniel than those tickets.
"Got a pen?" Angela inquired at the man who stood before her with all the infinite confidence in him.
Steven checked his pockets. Crap, all his life he carried a pen. Except that day, he didn't.
A pen was suddenly dangled before her by Grace. "Hurry up and write your name before the pen dries out." Grace winked at Angela.
And Angela took her advice. She signed the dotted line with fading, unsteady ink. And the second Angela signed written the full stop after her name, she was engulfed in big arms. Steven's arms.
"Thank you." His voice was a whisper and full of sincerity. But when he backed up from her, his posture was loftily straight as he addressed Grace and Jimmy. "Well, Donahue's, Daniel is now officially a Morris and a definite hundred percent my son. But thank you, deeply, for accepting him as your own family."
"Oh, he always will be." Grace set a tender hand on Steven's upper arm, her other hand touching his face. "And so are you now."
Apparently stunned, Steven looked at Jimmy. Only to receive back a nod and a brief smile, sustaining Grace's statement. "I'm absolutely grateful for that." In a swift move, Steven lifted Daniel into his arms like he weighed nothing. At that moment, it was impossible not to stare at the handsome boy who was still trying to understand the exchange between the adults. That beautiful boy was his son.
"I never thought he'd be interested in anything other than soccer." Angela remarked while Daniel watched the mixer truck pouring cement on the ground and the workers spreading the mixture with their hand tools.
"He is my son. And now, Daniel is also the heir to my company and your father's."
Angela turned to face Steven squarely. "I don't want to force Daniel into business against his will."
"Of course, I agree. He's still a kid. If he wants to be a soccer player, so be it, but I'd very happy to teach him business."
"Like you said, we'll see in a few years." Angela crossed her arms under her breasts.
Steven's brows rose. "Are we having our first quarrel as parents?"
Angela considered it for a second. "No." She tried not to let his lopsided smirk affect her. He knew she was think of their discussion as an argument. She was used to deciding all about Daniel by herself. Now she had to share everything with Steven. It was a big change for her.
