It seemed that the contract with Ryan had been settled very smoothly; I had thought it would take a few more days of negotiation.
On the twelfth, which was a week later, I said, "Alright, I’m heading back to sleep now!" After I finished speaking, I slipped away, and Grace, who was limping, couldn’t catch up.
As soon as I returned to my room, I began packing my things. Ryan signed the contract, which means he would make a lot of money and my task was complete. There was no need to put on a façade in front of Ryan. I intended to take this week to relax properly.
While I was halfway through packing, Grace suddenly called me. Her voice was tightly restrained with anger: "Hurry over here, Mr. Ryan Caldwell keeps asking to see you!" To make sure I believed her, she even let me listen to Ryan’s voice.
"Where is Emma? I want to see her, I want to see Emma."
Ryan slurred my name, reminiscent of how he used to call me every morning when he first woke up.
There was just one more week, and soon Ryan would no longer see me. Ryan had once again gotten drunk, and Grace, despite her sprained ankle, had to pick him up.
As they returned from a late-night snack, I happened to see Grace helping Ryan into the room. Grace’s eyes hinted that I should not compete with her.
I walked past them with indifference; a drunken Ryan was likely to act irrationally, and I did not dare to get too close.
However, as I passed by, Ryan, who had been resting on Grace’s shoulder, suddenly noticed me.
Ryan threw himself onto my back, and I heard his murmured plea:
"Don’t leave me."
Ryan’s words were garbled and his voice was unclear; I could not tell if it was a plea or a command.
I saw Grace’s eyes nearly spitting fire, trying to drag Ryan off me. She was so jealous of me. But Ryan’s size and Grace’s injury made it impossible for her to move him.
She even let me hear Ryan’s voice.
“Where is Emma? I want to see her, I want to see Emma.”
Ryan murmured my name as if he had whispered it countless times each morning when he first woke up. Why was it only when he was drunk that he thought of me?
I told Grace, “Don’t worry about him; he’ll fall asleep soon. I’m leaving, so don’t call me again.”
I tried to give Grace a few more instructions but was suddenly interrupted by Ryan’s clear and furious voice——he wasn’t truly that drunk or unconscious: “Leaving? Where do you think you’re going?”
