Lily and I had been married for five years, childless. My mom had hounded us relentlessly, showing up at our apartment and calling Lily “barren.” I hated confrontation, especially with her, but I wouldn’t let her insult Lily. I’d kicked her out. She stood outside, pounding on the door, calling me an ungrateful son.

Later, holding Lily close, I’d said, “It’s okay if we don’t have kids. We can be happy without them.”

But Lily insisted. “Jason, I know you want kids. I want to have your baby. We will have a baby.”

After rounds of fertility treatments, she finally got pregnant. She was ecstatic, announcing to everyone that our baby was a miracle, and we’d name her Luna.

Morning sickness, back pain, and anxiety plagued her throughout the pregnancy. She’d always reassure me that it was all worth it.

But when I was away on business, I got the call – she’d miscarried. My biggest regret: not being there for her, leaving her to face the pain alone.

I never imagined she’d chosen to end the pregnancy. She’d rekindled her relationship with her first love, and now I, and our unborn child, were in their way.
