Love is Gone novel Chapter 5

Lily arrived home early in the morning, placing a bouquet of red roses on my bedside table. “A belated Valentine’s Day gift,” she said.

Looking at the rain-soaked roses and the card tucked among the petals, I recognized the bouquet from the night before.

“Up all night?” I asked.

“Tons of stuff to handle at work. No time for sleep,” she said, rubbing her temples. “Pack your bags, honey. We're heading to the train station after breakfast. You look like you haven’t slept in days.”

“Put those roses in water or something. I don't have time.” She rushed out, hailing a cab.

I grabbed the recorder from her car, tossing the roses in the trash as I left the building.

The janitor retrieved them, frowning at me. “What a waste of beautiful flowers! Why throw them away?”

I glanced at the card in her hand: “I will love you forever.”

I forced a smile. “Yeah, I don’t need them anymore.”
