Back at home, I hit play on the recorder.

Lily was on the phone.

“Wait for me at the entrance to the building.”

“Miss me already?” She switched to speakerphone, and I heard him chuckle.

“What’s up? Don’t tell me you’re blowing me off. I can always go hang out with Jason instead.”

“Don’t you dare!”

Lily giggled.

“Weren’t we supposed to skip tonight?” he asked. “What’s with the sudden change of plans?”

“It’s Valentine’s Day, babe. I couldn’t stand the thought of you being all alone.”

“Aw, you’re the best. Drive safe. I’ll be downstairs with those flowers I got for you.”

“I told you this was last minute! When did you even have time to buy flowers?”

“I knew you couldn’t resist me. Was I right?”

Lily laughed. “Okay, okay, you win. I’m almost there. It’s raining cats and dogs out here, so bring an umbrella.”

Moments later, a tapping sound.

“Get in the back,” Lily instructed.

He climbed into the car, grumbling, “Guess I’m still not worthy of the front seat.”

“Jason has friends in the police department. Gotta be careful.”

“Ugh, you’re still stressing about him finding out?”

“…You’re unbelievable.” Lily sighed, opened the back door, and got in.

As the sounds of their intimacy filled the car, Oliver asked, “Do you love me?”

“If I didn’t, would I be here?”

“I love you too, Lily. Let’s have a baby. No more regrets.”

“Seriously? You always say that, but nothing ever happens.”

“Baby, you know I can deliver.”

“Hmph…”

I sat in our living room, replaying the recording until the battery died. But the echoes of their betrayal lingered.
