I didn’t deserve this. It wasn’t fair.
If I had another chance, I’d do everything differently.
"I’m waiting!" Rebecca’s sweet voice broke through my thoughts as the wolf lunged at me, ending my life in seconds.
Gasping, I suddenly found myself back in the reception room of my house. The familiar scent of lavender and rosemary from the sachets I used to place in every corner of the room filled the air. Something felt off—everything was in place, even the old furniture I loved so much. That furniture was thrown out by my nemesis. I didn’t understand what was happening until Max walked in with Becca in his arms. It hit me then—I was back in the past, exactly one year ago.
"The Moon Goddess has a twisted sense of humor," I thought to myself, the bitterness of the realization souring my mouth. "Of all the moments in my life, she brought me back to this one. Why?!"
Luckily, I knew how to hide my feelings well. I lifted my chin and met my husband’s gaze, forcing my expression to remain neutral.
"I understand this is sudden," Max explained, his voice carefully controlled, trying to sound considerate. I barely held back a scoff. Sudden? He had no idea.
"I know our agreement, but my wolf is going crazy. You’re not just my Luna but my best friend, who’s always understood me. I know you want what’s best for the pack. Rebecca is an omega and an orphan. In her pack Kat, it was horrible how they treated her! They abused her, treated her like a slave. I couldn’t leave her there. It would have been terrible, and my wolf would never forgive me."
He finally let go of Rebecca, walking toward me and taking my hands in his. His touch, once comforting and familiar, now felt foreign, like the grasp of a stranger.
"Let her stay in the pack for now. My wolf is stronger with her around; rejecting her would kill him. We can give Becca a peaceful life here. She will—"
"No," I said, my voice calm yet loud enough for everyone to hear, the single word cutting through the tension like a blade.
Everyone stared at me, shocked. Max’s eyes went wide.
“Kat, my wolf—” he began, the same excuse as always. I almost wanted to laugh. I’d heard it all before in my past life. Every time he wanted to be with Becca, he’d bring up his wolf. He never rejected her like we agreed, and soon enough, she became his mistress.
I tried to close my eyes, but the pain was unbearable. I was the one who truly cared about the pack, drowning myself in work to cope. That was another mistake. But now, I had a second chance, and I wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice. Becca had to go—now, before it was too late.
Back then, Max told me it was my choice, and I chose wrong. Letting Rebecca stay for the sake of the pack was a huge mistake. People died because of it. Ava was one of them, killed in Becca’s schemes. I had my doubts before, but now I knew for sure. I was going to get rid of this evil once and for all.
“I said no,” I repeated, turning to Max with cold resolve. “We talked about this, and we agreed. We’ll find a good pack to take care of her, but she’s not staying here. You need to reject her, just like we planned.”
“Please, no!” she whimpered, “I’m too weak! I’ll die if you reject me now! Please! I’ll do anything!”
Max froze, unable to reject his delicate mate. At that moment, I realized everything was lost. He turned to face me again, and I held his gaze with pride.
“Please, Alpha!” Becca sobbed. I had to give it to her—if I hadn’t known who she really was, I might have believed her. “I’ll be your slave! I can clean, cook, do anything! Just please, spare me! Don’t do this! I’ll serve your Luna!”
A jolt of anger shot through me at the mention of myself. I looked at my rival and met her gaze, full of well-hidden hatred.
“Please, my Luna!” the girl continued, still on her knees. “My fate is in your hands! Please, don’t kill me! Spare me! I’ll be your slave forever.”
No one spoke, and the only sound in the room was Rebecca’s pitiful sobs.
“Sweet girl,” I said, trying one last time, “There’s no need for all that. You’ll be taken care of, just not here.”
“Please, my Luna!” Becca crawled toward me, faster than I could dodge. She grabbed my dress, clinging to it. “The rejection will kill me! Please, spare me!”
