Bea was staying in one of the finished rooms for the night.
As she led us into the house, Liza and I looked around at the many knickknacks that she had hung up all around the living room and glimpsed a few scattered toys across the floor.
I immediately felt the walls of the house and poured my energy into it, sensing for any lingering magic.
I stiffened as I managed to pick up something, but it was strange. I calmed my breathing and took a deep breath, closing my eyes and allowing myself to tune into the atmosphere around me. One by one, I began to feel tiny particles of magic lingering in the air but what struck me as odd was that I couldn't recognize this type of magic energy. Since I was already exposed to Michael and Tiana's magic, I would've instantly been able to recognize their spell residues... but this was different.
Was Michael not involved in this?
My lips tugged down into a frown as I thought on the matter.
There was no other witch in the vicinity besides Michael... I was sure of it... So, if it wasn't a witch... what other creature had the ability to utilize magic? Fairies? Fairies rarely interacted with anyone outside of their own kind though...
Liza took note of the look on my face and asked, "what's wrong?"
I glanced at her anxious expression then shook my head, turning to Fiona and asking her to direct us towards the room Bea was staying in.
We followed behind her as we entered the hallway then turned into a room on our right.
The lights flickered on.
It was a spacious room with violet walls and two bunkbeds placed up against the wall. Adorable stuffed animals were thrown all over the beds and a doll house was spotted in the corner of the room. There was a small study table with a bookshelf right next to it stacked with children's books. It was your average kid's room.
"This was the room Bea was staying in before she suddenly disappeared," Fiona mentioned in the background.
Our feet creaked against the wooden floor as we looked around the room for anything out of place or suspicious.
"The presence of the strange magic is stronger in here," I muttered to myself as I continued to sense the magic particles around me. However, I couldn't quite pick out the exact spell that was used or the person beside said spell.
I curiously grazed my hand across the bed that she was sleeping in and frowned as I tried to recall any spells that could help me trace her location from here without getting screened off.
"What's in there?" Liza asked, drawing my attention to the door that she was approaching as she asked Fiona.
Fiona glanced across at her and replied, "that's the closet."
Liza touched the doorknob, intending to open it to peer inside but froze as a soft eerie song suddenly began to play from inside.
"All around the mulberry bush
The monkey chased the weasel
The monkey thought twas all in fun
Pop! Goes the weasel."
A shiver ran down my spine as my heart sunk in fear and Liza quickly released the doorknob and took a few steps away from the door.
She looked back at me expectantly and my stomach dropped at the look in her eyes. I shook my head vehemently, "why are you looking at me!? I'm not going in there!"
She hissed, "what do you mean you're not going in there!? You're the one with powers!"
"With no guts to back it up! We're trying to find Bea, not give me a heart attack! I sense nothing in there!"
"Well, if you sense nothing, why don't you open it and check!"
"Why don't you!?"
