Angela wore the silver ring on the ring finger of her right hand before she braced herself and followed Steven into the elevator.
Upon stepping foot out the main door of the condominium, they were greeted by the John, Steven's personal chauffeur since forever. The stout man still wore his white mustache and his ever gracious smile along with his neat uniform and cap. "Hello, Mrs. Morris. It's good to have you back."
It appeared that John didn't know she wasn't Steven's wife anymore and John was one of the few man Steven trusted blindly. That meant that Steven and her father were right that nobody knew of their divorce except them.
When the car stopped in front of the building of Morris Corporations, a shiver ran up Angela's spine at the thought of what's to come. Of the glares and stares and gawking of people.
John held the car door for her to step out. Steven was quickly beside her. His fingers forced their way to entwine with the fingers of her left hand she still held in a fist. "Let's go, honey."
Her heart fluttered all through the walk to the enormous door of the main entrance. As soon as her heels clacked on the ceramic tiles of the reception area, eyes began to turn and stay on her.
Angela checked on Steven. His grin was full of arrogant confidence, his head was held high. His lips lowered to her ear, his breath so close sending goosebumps onto her skin. "Smile, Angela. Smile."
But she couldn't. She kept her gaze lowered to the ground all the way to the elevator. All the way up the fifteen stories in the elevator, Steven hadn't let go of her hand. And had to admit she was slightly thankful for it. As much as she hated Steven, every clutch he pressed onto her hand was a little comforting. She felt completely out of place.
Once they were behind the closed door of his office, Angela released a much held back nervous breath. Until she realized exactly where she was.
That was the first familiar place she'd been to since her return. An bombardment of memories of her life before her downfall hit her at full speed. She took a deep breath in. She had to stay strong. She had to endure this.
"So how long am I supposed to stay here?" Angela questioned as she ambled further in the enormous office to stop at the ground-to-ceiling windows. The view from his office was spectacular. It overlooked the grand park of town. Everything seemed so serene from up there.
"Enough for my employees to think I had office sex with my beautiful wife."
"No." Angela snapped the word with emphasis. She turned to face him. His face was so close to hers. Yet she held her stance. "You think whatever gone between us in here or anywhere else for that matter was not real?"
"I know it wasn't. It was all real. I just wanted to see if you still remembered how it felt." His fingers brushed up her arm, to her neck. Her eyes threatened to shut at his touch. Steven noticed and instantly stopped his caress.
Damn him, he did that deliberately. He must have known that he still affected her that much. But oh, dear, if he hadn't stopped, Angela would have been lost in trance by his touch.
With a smirk of satisfaction, Steven walked away. It was surprise to him to see Angela react that easily at his touch. But then again, she always did.
He removed his jacket, slow enough for Angela to ogle the material of his white shirt stretching over his sculpted chest before he hung it neatly on the coat hanger.
"So," Steven began. "Do you want to tell me anything about your life in the past four years?"
