"He looks just like him." Grace whispered.
"Yea. He does. He always did." Angela agreed in a low voice.
The door opened slightly. It was Steven who leaned at the door arch and locked his eyes with hers, waiting for her approval to walk in.
Angela took a deep breath. Oh, dear. Since they had left from Steven's condo until that very moment, she had only thought about her son and only of her son. Not once has she thought about Steven meeting Daniel.
When she had not spoken a word, Steven continued into the room. Angela's wide eyes met Grace whose hand clutched encouragingly onto hers. Steven stopped at the foot of the hospital bed.
For a moment, the room went still. Grace watched Angela who stared at Steven who was eyeing Daniel.
"I thought he was a baby." Steven broke the silence. "In your photo, he was a baby."
"He grew up." Angela was impressed at herself she could speak.
Her heart began fluttering faster when Steven rounded Daniel's bed. A knot formed in her throat as she observed Steven's brows wrinkling in curiosity, saw his head lower down to look at Daniel closely. "You said your son didn't look like you. You were right." Steven's baffled eyes flickered between Angela and Grace. "Yet none of Tony's family is as blonde as your boy."
Oh, dear, there it was. Angela sensed what was passing through his mind, knew the question playing on his face was the same one she feared answering.
"Hello Donahue's." The male doctor who walked in with Jimmy interrupted. And Angela was more than thankful for that. "We meet at again this soon."
"Dr. Gibbs." Angela greeted the young doctor with a shake of his hand. "Won't say it's good to meet you again this soon."
"It's not, no. Meeting at this place is more than likely not good. But let's look at the bright side of this. I've been monitoring Daniel since he came in and I can tell you he's fine for the moment. The tests we took showed that his blood has dropped. Not too low but still worrisome. Unfortunately, the tests didn't give us any sign of the cause."
"Will he be okay?" Angela asked the only question she wanted to hear the answer for.
"He will be. However I do suggest a blood transfusion."
Another one, Angela thought. Her baby boy was to live through another transfusion. She hated seeing the nurse pricking her son's little arm. Though Daniel had practically gotten used to it by now. Unlike her who never would.
Angela met Jimmy's glance. Jimmy nodded lightly, understanding the pleading in her eyes. "You can take my blood, doctor."
The doctor grinned at Jimmy with a light chuckle. "Oh, I forgot Daniel had a personal blood donor. You're a very kind man, Jim, to help your nephew like that. How long has it been since you last gave your blood to little Daniel?"
"Angela." The sound of her full name coming from his mouth compelled her to turn and face him. "I've asked you a question before."
"No you didn't."
"I didn't. But do I have to say it? You know my question, Angela."
Angela gulped. Returned her gaze to her son. Ran her fingers in his fringed blonde hair.
"Angela." Again, she faced him. His narrow, rigid, grey eyes caught her glassy, heavy, green ones and constrained from moving or even blink. Her heartbeat began to echo in her ears. "Who does your son look like, Angela?"
"You already know." Angela whispered.
"But I haven't heard you say it." Steven rounded the bed to her side. He seemed impeccably calm but she knew he wasn't. With a grip on her forearm, he made her stand up on her feet. His dark eyes set upon her. And he said nothing. His stare was doing all the talking for him. He only wanted to hear her answer.
Angela raised her chin up. She was leaving her no choice. And so she spoke before the little confidence she had left shattered completely. "My son is the spitting image of his father... You."
