"How long is he going to look at me like that?" I whispered over to Jeremiah.
He chuckled, his mouth full of sauce as he slurped the string of spaghetti into his mouth.
"Probably forever, you just threaten his life, weird but true, sugar is Gunner's kryptonite," he whispered.
I bit my lip looking down to my small half eaten plate of pasta. "Grandpa could I be excused?" I asked.
He smiled and nodded, giving me the sense of relief I needed as I quietly scooted out of my chair and set my glass and plate unto the sink. Saying goodnight to the Alpha and his family I scurried to be away from those glaring dark blue eyes. He gave me the chills, not because he was hideous, Gunner was nothing close to horrid. His manners and action simply had the power to make me run for the hills. I shuddered as I headed for the back door unto our back porch.
I stared across the yard to the old swing set grandpa had bought for me so long ago. It had been ages since I had taken a seat on those tiny swings. However, I was betting that I still fit in one of them. My feet grew itchy as I walked over to them taking in the white painted metal bars with pink stripes. Grazing my fingers over the grey chain I gripped the swing in my hand and took a seat.
"Great, I can't believe I still fit in my six year old swings," I said to myself.
"Mind if I join you?" Jeremiah asked. He smiled as he made his way over, squeezing into the small swing next to me. "Don't feel bad Mindy, Gunner is just a stiff, you have to remember that he has been trained all his life to act and talk the way he does. I'm sure he would have been a down to earth guy had he not been trained to act so taunt," Jeremiah said.
"I know, it's not the reason why I am feeling unsteady," I lied, looking down to the hole under my feet. Looking over towards Jeremiah I noticed there was still grass over that part. I had always played on my own.
"Mindy there is something I want to talk to you about, I hope you can let me finish before you interrupt me," he suddenly blurted.
I smiled brightly, sitting up a little as Jeremiah shyly looked down to his feet. "You found your mate didn't you," I said, excitingly.
He reached over taking the chain of my swing to scoot me closer to him. I furrowed my brow confused as I watched him lean towards me and suddenly land a kiss on my lips. My eyes grew wide and before I knew it I was lying flat on my back. Jeremiah shot from his seat trying to help me up.
"Mindy are you alright?" he asked, bending over to lift me off the ground. He steadied me finally letting go of my arms. His face was filled with concern as he inspected me over.
"Mindy, you and I have known each other since I can remember, and if you think I am playing a prank then get that out of your head. I'm not trying to play with your heart, you are just...you understand me, you're so easy to be around, and I feel like I can be my true self whenever you are near. There is just a big positive aura all over you, I like that about you Mindy, and I like your inner beauty, you are just awesome," he explained, a crooked grin on his face.
"What about your true mate Jeremiah, what's going to happen when you meet her. I sure as hell am not going to let you reject her," I said.
He dropped my hand his face falling for a moment. "We will see when the time comes," he then replied.
I shook my head my throat shutting as I let out an uneven breath. "I can't let you do that. I'm sorry but trust me, the moment you two lock gazes I will be a long distant memory." I tried to reason.
"You don't know that Mindy," he protested, his hands slipping into his pockets.
I walked over to the back porch, feeling the light breeze bring a chill over my skin. The wind carried a musky scent in the air, almost overpowering as I turned to look at Jeremiah. He simply stood there his eyes searching mine. The sky behind him began to taint with purple, orange, and pink, the sun setting between the Gran Mountain's.
