"But you're...what are we gonna do?"

"Wow," he smirked. "for a Luna, you have no idea what to do most of the time."

"I'm a work in progress."

"I'm not trying to pressure you or anything, but you do know you're leading this war right? You'll have to take charge soon enough."

"Too soon actually," I said to myself.

"You see that tree over there, it's the big one in the middle. There's an opening on the side and it's pretty hollow. At the count of three, I want you to run to it. It can't chase us both at once so I'll go across from you. If anything it'll be confused for a while, but don't count on it, they're not that indecisive."

"But what if it follows you? Your blood is all over the place."

"I'm faster than you so that'll actually be a good thing."

"I'm sorry for getting you shot."

"I'm sorry for throwing you."

There was a growled behind me and it came back to me that thing was still there.

"We have to do it now. It's sensing something."

"W-wait! What do you mean!"

"1...2....3!"

He pushed himself off the rock and took my hand. I was having a hard time keeping up with him and like before when we were running to the net, I fell. But this time my hand slipped from his. I skidded on my stomach and came to a stop three seconds later. I could feel the lion-wolf's warmth before I rolled over and looked up at it. As its breath blew the stray hairs from my face, I tried to wiggle my way from between its legs but Jacob said that'll tempt it.

It drew in closer to me, but out of nowhere, it leaped after Jacob instead. He ran to the hollow tree and practically leaped in the small hole. The lion-wolf clawed and rammed against the tree in an attempt to get him out.

"Jacob!" I yelled after him. "Are you okay!"

"Yeah! Just dandy!"

"Why didn't it kill me!"

"I don't know! Maybe my scent was more appealing!"

I rolled my eyes at what he said before it occurred to me what actually had happened.

"Wait, did you say scent!"

"Yeah!"

"I guess they didn't tell you. No one's been able to pick up your scent since you came back. Not even Sage."

"I can hear you breathing from here. Just try to relax, and focus."

I took a couples breaths and rose the bow again. I slowly pulled the arrow towards my ear and released. Immediately I knew it was a dead miss. The arrow shot right past the tree and disappeared into the woods.

"It's okay." I heard Jacob said, but he sounded different.

I dropped to my knees in agony, my anger directed at one person only.

Troy

Was he trying to kill us? How did he expect us to go up against something like that if we can't even shift- well if they can't even shift?

Swoosh. Thunk.

I jerked backward as an arrow jammed into the head of the lion-wolf. It fell to the ground motionless and a few seconds later it reverted into a mountain lion.

"Guys! They're over here!" I heard behind me but I didn't move. A chorus of footstep stampeded towards us and they all rush past me to tend to Jacob. There was a tap on my shoulder twice before I turned to see Vin staring at me.

"You held it wrong."

A redhead girl crouched down before Jacob and gave him an incentive nod before looking at me, her long hair shielding half of her face. Georgie, I think Conner said her name was. She was the same girl I saw in the middle of the group with the other guy named Evan when I discovered Jacob was still here. She was lean, yet with enough muscle to not seem unfeminine or unflattering. She was tall, like pretty much every werewolf around here. I curtly matched my gaze with a few leaves by my feet. They just had to be talking about me...

I get it that it's my fault Jacob got hurt but they didn't have to make a scene about it. He's healing now so build a bridge and get over it. Conner told me they found some supplies under a tree where the lion-wolf was suspended. After the cage suddenly fell, he said it ran off and I assume it was because of Jacob's blood.
