"Sure."
A scream tore through the dark night and my eyes shot open. I felt Jacob's arm tightened around my waist as we both shot up. The moon wasn't shining that bright tonight so the fire made it easier to see what was happening.
The roots of the trees around us were uplifting and pulling away one of the girls in the woods. Soon, their vine-like arms began snaking around everyone in pairs as they clawed the earth to keep their ground.
"What's going on!" Jacob panicked, his heart beat racing.
"The trees are coming to life!"
"Georgie!" Evan yelled, holding onto her for dear life. But he too was taken by a tree but in the opposite direction. Everybody was panicking now that two of their best were now gone, and it didn't help that we can't see when the trees are attacking.
"What do we do!"
"I don't know!" Jacob rubbed his face. "I never fought trees before!"
My eyes darted from tree to tree, trying to think of a plan, when I suddenly realized something.
"Do you see that?" I said to him. "Only ten trees are alive. The rest are normal. We just have to take down the rest."
"And how?"
I looked around again. "I don't know! I don't think the most basic way to kill a tree could help us right now!"
"Watch out!" He pulled me to the center of the campsite where the fire was still managing to blaze. Everyone was almost gone by now, and the remainder four joined us in the middle. The stems drew into to us, intertwining and cracking as they came. I could feel Jacob's eyes drilling hole at the side of my head but I didn't dare look at him. But I should have when he did, because the next thing I knew, his grip was taken away with him.
"Suffer." I heard myself say, not believing the words actually left my mouth. The man looked up at me and I could see the fear in his eyes. He was pleading to me but seeing him beg had my lips curling upward in a smile. "Wither." I glared, my voice cold enough to freeze beer.
"Wither." I found myself saying, and peaceful calming engulfed me before I heard the trees withering to dust around me. It was as if I was another person. As if I was not in control if my body. When I killed that man, apart of me enjoyed it, while the other part was completely terrified.
I remember now why I always wake up. I didn't want to remember. Purple was for me.
I was afraid of myself.
They were all staring at me, every single one of them. Even the moon. I was still different, but I was more in control than before. The wind blew from our feet, upward, swirling the ashes in its invisible tornado then layering it with the earth once it settled. It still didn't hide what happened, they all witnessed it. Moments ago they were being hauled away only to be freed as fast.
I could see why I didn't want to remember. I'm a monster, even my mother thought so even if she didn't want to believe it. When I killed that man, I could see the fright and uncertainty in her eyes, in both of them. It was the first time they've ever seen my capabilities and I could tell they were alarmed by it. I was only 4 at the time so I could only imagine their position.
