Jacob swallowed at the thought.

“And what if he were better than your husband?” The question left his mouth before he could stop himself. “What if your mate really loved you and was, say, a noble Lycan?”

“It didn’t matter back then,” I snorted. “He could have been the only son of the Moon Goddess! I—I used to love Maximus. I would have kept my promise to him and honored our marks. But since he didn’t do the same for me…”

“Hasn’t it been just a few days?” Richard interjected. “He could still reject his mate for you anytime.”

“But he won’t,” I replied coldly. “Besides, it doesn’t matter anymore. You can only break someone’s trust once.”

“Very well!” Jacob quickly agreed before his Beta could offer a solution on how to fix the broken relationship with my husband. “Divorce it is then.”

They both looked at him in shock, and he cleared his throat.

“What about the pack?” he asked, changing the subject.

I patiently explained how we merged our packs when we married and why I wanted to take it back. I had good reasons, and he agreed with everything way too quickly. That’s weird. I thought. Wasn’t he the one who rejected my proposal?

“So?” I asked, arching my brow when I realized he had been quiet for too long, just staring at me.

This was his time to respond, and I could tell he didn’t think I expected much. If anything, I was eager to return to the party, where all those Alphas were falling over themselves for me. I was sure at least half of them were going to offer their support in hopes of getting me for themselves. I saw how they looked at me. They were all hungry for me.

He must have realized he had made the worst first impression while we were talking on the phone though.

“I will support you,” he offered, and I was surprised. I hadn’t expected that. He had a lot of work ahead of him.

“You will?” I asked, making sure I’d heard him right.

He tried to hold back a huge grin but failed miserably, considering how Richard was now watching us with his brows knitted.

“I can accept that.” He grinned before confirming, “If you find your mate, you’re free to embrace your bond.”

“Then it’s a deal,” I agreed. I stood up and offered my hand for a handshake, which he used to pull me closer, startling me.

“Good.” He wrapped his hand around my waist in front of his now-shocked Beta and led me to the exit. “Shall we go then?”

“Where?” I asked, my rosy lips parted in surprise.

“We have a show to give!”
