His expression softened, and he put his hands on my shoulders. “You will always be my Luna.”
Thinking about the past, I almost laughed at his words. He had stood by when Becca took over and watched as Maximus stripped me of my title. I knew I couldn’t count on him.
“That’s very sweet of you,” I sighed. “But as you can see, you might have a new Luna soon.”
I walked past him and got into the car. As I was about to pull in the train of my dress, Will knelt beside me and carefully arranged it. Our eyes met for a moment, his blue eyes shining brightly. “Maximus might have a new mate or wife, but I’ll only have one Luna.”
He closed the door before I could say anything and got into the driver’s seat.
Just then, the passenger door opened, and Charlotte, Maximus’s sister, tried to get in.
“Oh, good, Will!” she giggled. “I want to go home early too!”
“You need to find another car, Char,” Will replied dryly.
“But I—” Charlotte looked at me, surprised.
“She can ride with us,” I sighed. I didn’t want her to join us. Charlotte was rarely nice to me, and I didn’t want to upset her further.
“No,” Will said firmly. “I have orders to take Luna home alone. For safety reasons. Find another car, Charlotte.”
“But—” she started to argue, but Will growled loudly, and she quickly left the car. He rarely used his dominance, but today he did.
The car doors locked, and we drove off. We spent most of the ride in silence, exchanging a few comments about the party.
“The Lycan King…” Will muttered. “What’s that about?”
“He’s trying to maintain a friendly relationship with us,” I shrugged, looking away.
“And yet he only spoke and danced with you,” Will noted.
“He heard about my work,” I lied smoothly. “You sound surprised. Is it so strange for him to pay attention to me?”
“Of course not.” Will cleared his throat, gripping the steering wheel tightly. “If anyone deserves recognition, it’s you. I’m just surprised he came at all.”
It was true. I was surprised too. In my previous life, he never attended the Alpha Ball. We never met.
I didn’t know what to make of it. The future was changing. On one hand, that was good—I needed things to change. But on the other hand, it was scary. If the changes were too big, I wouldn’t know what to expect.
Back in my bedroom, I locked the door behind me.
“What’s up?” Ava asked, looking worried from her desk with a sketchbook in front of her. I was relieved to see my best friend and gave her a tired smile.
“Nothing. Just came back early.” I sighed, kicking off my heels. Ava put her sketch away, and I noticed it was a caricature of Rebecca—a really good one. The girl was smiling wide while holding a knife behind her back.
“That bad, huh?” she asked, sounding disappointed.
“Actually, it went great!” I grinned and showed her the phone that Jacob had given me. “You won’t believe it, but the Lycan King himself was there!”
“What?!” Ava gasped and jumped up. “Really?! What did he say? What did he do? Did you talk to him?”
We talked until it was late. I told Ava everything, and we planned our next steps. We needed to be perfectly in sync for everything to work.
Before bed, I looked at the phone on my bedside table. There were no numbers or instructions. It looked brand new.
Why did the king give it to me? What was the point? He already had my number and could call anytime.
I realized I couldn’t stop thinking about him. I should have been focused on my husband and his betrayal, but thoughts of King Jacob kept coming back. He was different, even for a lycan. The way he spoke, the way his lips curled into a smirk—it seemed like he knew something I didn’t.
