And that dance. It was short, but it left an impression. Not just on the guests, but on me too.

“I have my reasons for everything,” he had said, and I could only wonder what those reasons were with me. He had quickly shifted from mocking me to offering me a chance I couldn’t pass up.

I was thinking about him when the phone rang.

I hesitated before answering, but I swiped my finger across the screen anyway.

“Hello?” I hated how my voice shook.

“What are you wearing?” the Lycan King asked, his voice deeper than I remembered.

What kind of question was that? I started to worry he was interested in me for the wrong reasons.

“I’m not answering that,” I said firmly.

“Why not?” he asked, as if it was the most normal question in the world.

“Because it’s inappropriate!” I scolded him. “Who asks a married woman that? What are you wearing, Jacob?”

I couldn’t control my irritation and used his first name, biting my lip afterward.

“Easy,” he chuckled, clearly enjoying this. “I’m wearing nothing, Kat.”

I swallowed hard, my mind conjuring an image despite my best efforts to resist.

“That was—I didn’t mean to—” I stammered, trying to explain, my face burning.

“No offense taken,” he said, sounding amused. “And I bet you’re wearing something lacy and… cream. You seem like a cream kind of woman.”

I glanced down at myself, almost cursing under my breath. He was right. I was wearing a cream slip with lace. Most of my nightgowns were cream-colored with lace.

“I can neither confirm nor deny that,” I shot back, trying to sound professional. “If that’s the only reason you called, I’m hanging up—”

“That’s not the only reason,” he said calmly.

“So?” I felt like he was toying with me, and I didn’t like it. But I couldn’t hang up either.

I opened the door and saw dozens of eyes on me. The room was filled with omegas having a tea party—a party I didn’t even know about.

“Oh, Luna!” Becca rushed over to me. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t think you’d mind me gathering my friends here! This— we—”

Fake tears started to form in her eyes again, and I was just about done with her drama.

Here we go again.

It took everything in me not to roll my eyes. Becca was beyond annoying and completely shameless. I could see right through her little act with all these omegas. She had done it before, trying to win over the lower-ranking wolves when she couldn't get the higher-ups on her side. In my past life, this was one of my first serious defeats. I’d always believed in the loyalty of the pack, especially since we’d always been so good to the omegas. I personally made sure of that.

But something was different this time. I remembered that last time, Becca hadn’t started these little gatherings until much later. It had been months after she joined the pack. Now, she was already stirring things up. Another change, and I didn’t like it. I had spent a lot of time reflecting on my past mistakes, and this one seemed the hardest to fix. But I had to try.

“Luna,” Becca whimpered, almost in tears, “I’m so sorry for inviting all the omegas over. I just felt bad for them because they never get to enjoy things like this, especially at the packhouse. Please, don’t be mad at us. I promise, we all know our places.”

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes again. This was going to be interesting. I scanned the room, taking in the sight of Becca serving biscuits and sandwiches. Plastering on my best smile, I took the central seat.

“Becca,” I said with a grin, “you’re still new here. As I always remind you during your panic attacks, this pack is different from the one you came from. Omegas are welcome in this house anytime, just like any other member of the pack. Everyone is welcome here, but it would be better if you let us know in advance about big gatherings like this. Our omegas don’t lack biscuits or sandwiches. If you really wanted to treat them, we could have prepared something nicer, like the food we serve at our seasonal parties. You enjoy those, don’t you?”
