At the entrance of the packhouse, a few cars were parked, and people unloaded boxes, big and small, and extravagant bouquets that filled the air with sweet fragrances.

For a moment, I frowned. This scene was all too familiar. In my past life, Maximus had showered his new mate with gifts, trying to give her “what she deserved.” In this life, Becca had already gotten a budget for her needs. It was irritating that he was doing this without a good reason.

But then my eyes went to Maximus, who stood on the stairs looking gloomy, Rebecca hiding behind him. She wasn’t jumping with joy like before. Maximus wasn’t smiling smugly either. Something was off.

“You seriously thought I’d want to see this?” I asked, holding back my annoyance as I looked at Will.

“Why not?” Will seemed confused for a moment. “The alphas of so many packs sent their regards to you. I thought—”

“Excuse me, what?” I asked, shocked. Will quickly looked away.

“These are gifts sent by alphas for you, Luna,” he said calmly. “They are—”

“Not wasting any time!” Jacob said in a deep, cold voice, his hands in his pockets. Why hadn’t he thought to bring her something? It was so obvious! You court a woman—you give her gifts. He wanted to kick himself but now wasn’t the time for regrets.

“Oh!” I looked back at the people unloading the boxes for my room.

This was an unexpected development!

A very useful development.

I could use this to my advantage in so many ways. It opened up more options for my plan, and I immediately started thinking about what to do next.

“Katherine!” Maximus growled, coming closer.

He didn’t look happy, and I knew why. Back in the day, no one would dare send gifts to his wife without a special reason. But now, people assumed I’d be “back on the market” soon. Maximus gave them that impression when he didn’t reject his mate and paraded her at important events. Now, he was facing the consequences of his actions.

“Yes, Maximus?” I said sweetly, batting my eyelashes. Even though he was furious and I had no wolf, the Lycan king was still by my side. For some reason, this gave me more confidence to handle the situation.

“No need to cry, Becca,” I said loudly. “Just pick what you want and take it. Don’t insult your Alpha and Luna. I think I’ve already shown that I’m not greedy and can share these little things with you.”

I walked on without waiting for a response. I knew I’d made my point.

Jacob stood beside me, I did not know what was going on in his head, but it seemed to me that there was an inner battle going on within him. For what, I did not know. We soon arrived at the office, and my thought was quickly redirected away.

“Here.” I pointed to a door leading to my office, and he opened it for me, letting me in first. As soon as he closed it, he scooped me up in his arms, making me squeal in shock, and carried me to the desk, gently placing me on it.

“Wh-what are you doing?” I stuttered, looking around. He tried to look harmless, but I flinched anyway.

“Your neck,” he said, pointing at my mark. “It’s still inflamed.”

“It is?” I touched it with my fingers and realized how hot it was. He was right. “I should probably call the pack doctor.” I started to mind link my friend, but Jacob gently took my face in his hands.
