“I can help,” he offered, looking into my eyes, and for some reason, I trusted him. “Would you let me try?”

“Um,” I trembled. “Okay.”

I had no idea what I was agreeing to, and when he buried his face in the crook of my neck, I forgot how to breathe. His hot breath on my skin sent shivers through me. This man had a strange effect on me—one I couldn’t understand.

“What are you doing?” I asked, starting to breathe heavily at our closeness.

“You know,” Jacob said, almost laughing into my hair, “Lycans have this… healing gift.”

“They do?” I asked. I’d never heard of that before.

“Kind of.” He avoided a straight answer, and I was about to ask more when I felt the slow, torturous stroke of his tongue on my sensitive skin. I couldn’t believe this was happening.

The Lycan king was licking me!

My first instinct was to push Jacob away, but the moment his tongue touched my skin, I couldn’t do it. The sensation was intoxicating, almost therapeutic. I tried to convince myself that if I thought of him as a doctor—a tall, handsome, ridiculously hot doctor—this would all make sense. He was kissing a sensitive spot on my neck, one hand gripping my waist, the other tangled in my hair to angle my head just right.

I made a half-hearted attempt to push him away, but my mind was lost in the rush of sensations he was causing. My breathing grew shallow, and I bit my lip so hard I nearly drew blood. When a moan slipped out of my mouth, Jacob seemed to lose whatever restraint he had left.

When my hand brushed against his chest and touched the skin of his neck, he nearly lost control. I could feel his sharp canines grazing my skin between his kisses. A wave of shock coursed through me, but I still didn’t push him away, though I wasn’t sure why. A few seconds later, his tongue was back at work, and everything else faded away.

Healing came first, I told myself.

Suddenly, the door swung open. Ava stood frozen at the entrance, holding several large gift boxes, jolting me back to reality. I quickly pushed Jacob away, which didn’t make him happy. He grunted, his eyes flashing gold as if his wolf was on the verge of taking over. He furrowed his brow and closed his eyes, rubbing the bridge of his nose. I knew I didn’t need to worry, at least not about him losing control.

But Ava was grinning at me, and her brother Dean was peeking out from behind her.

“Oh my!” Ava snickered as she barged in, nudging her brother. “Close the door, Dean. We don’t need anyone else walking in on this!”

Ava looked a bit surprised but quickly masked it with a crooked smile.

“Well, well, well,” she snorted, “I guess it’s true that Lycans don’t mind high-ranking women.”

“Why would we?” Jacob replied calmly. “If someone’s capable, their gender shouldn’t matter.”

“I couldn’t agree more,” Ava nodded, glancing at me with a mischievous smile. “And he’s not at all like you described him!”

Jacob caught on to Ava’s hint and turned to me with a smirk. “Now, I’m dying to know—how did you describe me to your future Beta?”

“I told her you are a mighty and respectable king!” I said, clearing my throat and shooting Ava a warning look. “What else would I say?”

“Anyway,” Ava interrupted, grabbing Dean’s arm and pulling him toward the exit. “We’ll leave, and you can continue... whatever this is! But next time, lock the doors. You’re lucky it was us. It could’ve been anyone. At least Dean and I can keep a secret, unlike some others around here.”
