“We weren’t making out!” I tried to explain, but Ava wasn’t buying it.
“Yeah, sure,” she waved goodbye with a grin, clearly not believing me.
The doors closed, and we were alone again.
“Your mark,” Jacob began, his voice low, clearly wanting to pick up where we left off.
“It’s fine now!” I quickly said, touching my neck. It felt normal again, so I stepped away, moving behind my desk to create some distance. “Those Lycan healing abilities are something else!”
Jacob tried to hide his disappointment, but I could see it. He wanted more, but I couldn’t let that happen. Not now. Maybe not ever. This simply felt… Strange to me.
“Lycans will surprise you many times in the future,” he chuckled as I handed him a folder full of paperwork. I could feel my cheeks flushing pink.
“I’m sure they will,” I smiled politely, trying to shift back into business mode. I needed to put my guard back up after what had just happened.
It hurt to think my wolf was gone because of another man, that I was heartbroken over Maximus. I could accept any other reason for losing Aila, but this? This felt like torture.
“So, as you can see,” I explained, pointing to the papers as I stood next to him again, “I’ve proposed changes to the current laws. Here are the suggested statements.”
“Where?” he asked, feigning ignorance as he moved the folder slightly away, making me lean in closer.
He was enjoying this, I could tell. It wasn’t much, but he knew it was all he’d get for now. He didn’t push for more, savoring what he could.
“Here and here,” I clarified, trying to stay patient.
“So,” I paused, biting my lip, “What do you think?” I asked, feeling a bit anxious.
“I think it’s a much bigger problem than I initially thought,” Jacob said, closing the folder. “We’ll need to brainstorm for at least a few days. We also need to check it against Lycan laws.”
“Of course,” I agreed. “We can arrange a call whenever it’s convenient for you.”
“No.” He tried not to smirk. “I think we need to meet in person. You’ll have to come to the Lycan territory for a day. Or two. Or three. Maybe a whole week.”
“But,” I gasped. This was not what I expected.
Before I could think too much about it, Jacob made it clear what was going on.
“Don’t you think you’re being a bit unprofessional, acting like this during a business meeting, Alpha...” Jacob said, lifting an eyebrow like he didn’t even know Maximus’s name.
“Grimm. Just like my wife here. Maximus Grimm.” I could tell Maximus was insulted, but he didn’t show it. Even Maximus, the strongest werewolf Alpha, knew better than to cross a Lycan King. Not now, not ever.
Despite how much he hated seeing me near Jacob, Maximus had to keep his cool.
“My apologies—” Maximus waited for Jacob to tell him what to call him.
“King Jacob,” the Lycan corrected, sneering. Maximus’s grip on me tightened, almost to the point of hurting.
“My apologies, King Jacob.” Maximus’s voice was strained, like he was forcing the words out. “I just missed my wife so much I got carried away.”
“Hmm,” Jacob sneered again. “And here I thought you were an Alpha. Shouldn’t you be more in control of your emotions? You seemed fine without her the other day, if I remember correctly.”
