Maximus had no comeback for that, so I took the chance to slip out of his grasp. I moved closer to Jacob, and I could see the tension ease out of his shoulders. It was like he could breathe easier now that I was nearer to him than to Maximus.
“Anyway,” I cut in, switching to a more formal tone, “The King and I were discussing the new laws, Maximus. We need more time to—”
“Of course,” Maximus interrupted, as if my role as Luna wasn’t important. He’d always been like that, assuming I’d handle everything perfectly. He never got involved, even though he relied on me for my advice when it came to pack decisions. My knowledge was useful to him, but he rarely admitted it.
“Take as much time as you need, my dear.” He reached out to touch me, but I crossed my arms, letting him know that wasn’t happening.
“It’s good that your husband is so supportive,” Jacob said, sounding more pleased than before. “We were just discussing how some Lycan laws might be helpful for us. A quick meeting or phone call isn’t enough. We need to work closely together. So, we decided the Luna will come to my kingdom for a week.”
I nearly choked on my own breath but managed to hide my surprise. We hadn’t decided anything of the sort.
“A week?” Maximus’s eyes widened as he processed what he’d just heard. “This is—”
“Not enough?” Jacob interrupted with a chuckle. “Then let’s make it two.”
“No,” Maximus growled, and I saw Jacob’s eyes flash with that dangerous golden hue. I tensed, unsure of what would happen next.
“So, do you think your wife can handle everything in just one week?” Jacob pressed, forcing Maximus to respond. Maximus knew he didn’t have much choice.
“She can get it all done in less than a week,” Maximus insisted, trying to assert himself.
“Let’s not push the Luna too hard,” Jacob smirked. “We don’t want to overwork her, do we?”
I felt uncomfortable with how they were discussing me like I wasn’t there, and it annoyed me.
Still, I couldn’t deny that this situation wasn’t entirely bad. Becca had been quiet since joining the pack, mostly crying and staying out of the way. Letting Maximus focus on her might actually work to my advantage, especially since he wouldn’t feel guilty about it. Plus, Jacob’s help could be invaluable.
But…
I couldn’t ignore how Jacob made me feel when his lips were on my skin. Was he really just helping for the sake of helping? If his motives weren’t pure, could I still accept his assistance?
Thinking about my people, I knew I had to try. Jacob didn’t seem like the type who’d force me into anything. And honestly, there was a good chance he wouldn’t even have to. Just the thought of being near him made my cheeks flush. I touched them, trying to cool myself down, but I saw Jacob notice.
“Aila!” I called out in my mind. “Are you there? Are you okay?”
I had so many questions, but she didn’t answer. I couldn’t feel her presence again.
But still, this was a good sign. It gave me hope.
“I really don’t like him!” Maximus’s voice pulled me back to the present. I realized he’d been standing there with me the whole time, arms crossed, watching Jacob leave. “Kat, you need to be careful with him. I don’t trust that guy!”
I looked at him, amused. Was he serious? Did he think we’d just sit down and chat like nothing had happened?
“It’s just business, Maximus. Relax,” I said casually, moving away from the window. “Besides, having a connection with the Lycans is good for our pack.”
“I think he’s the kind of guy who’d make empty promises and leave you with nothing,” Maximus said with a frown.
I almost laughed at how ironic that was. Wasn’t he the one full of empty promises?
