I couldn’t help but cut in, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “And here I thought you were treated like a slave in your old pack. Werewolves don’t let omegas handle the horses. They're too scared, and we have to take care of them ourselves to form a bond. Letting an omega do it would be a luxury.”

For once, Becca didn’t burst into tears or show any fear. She didn’t even flinch. I wondered if spending one night with my husband had given her a newfound confidence. The thought almost made me laugh.

“Our pack was different,” Becca replied with that overly sweet smile, removing her hand from Dean’s, making him blush even more. “Not every pack has an Alpha as amazing as Alpha Maximus. My old Alpha thought taking care of horses was beneath him. He kept them just for show, and omegas did all the dirty work. But you're right; it felt like a privilege.”

“I see,” I said, moving to the coffee station to make myself a cup.

“Luna,” Becca called out in that sugary tone, “I can make you a cup. I am the omega, after all, and you are the Luna.”

I rolled my eyes where she couldn’t see. I’d only accept coffee from Becca if I wanted a quick way out of this life.

“As you just said,” I replied calmly as I loaded the coffee machine, “this pack is very different from yours. I can make my own coffee. Thanks.”

“Kat,” Dean stammered, clearly uncomfortable, “I’ve got to go. Battle practice soon. It was nice to see you. And nice to finally meet you, Becca.”

“See you around, Dean.” I turned just in time to see Becca brush her palm over his arm, giving him a flirtatious smile that sent him hurrying out.

Goddess, I couldn’t stand her. She was absolutely shameless.

Once Dean was gone, Becca and I locked eyes. Her smile faded, dropping the innocent act.

“What’s this? No tears today?” I asked as I took a seat at the table with my coffee.

“You don’t like them, do you? I didn’t want to offend you,” she replied, that fake smile still plastered on her face.

This was new. She’d never acted so bold before. They’d only spent one night together, and she was already acting fearless. What was she trying to pull?

I kept my cool, sipping my coffee, refusing to let her see any sign of discomfort.

But now, Becca had the perfect opportunity. If I lashed out, it would be understandable, given the situation. But it would still make me look bad, and she’d earn sympathy.

“Nice try,” I said with a quiet laugh, taking another sip of my coffee. Becca’s expression soured, clearly frustrated that her trick didn’t work.

“I think you misunderstood what I was saying,” she said, narrowing her eyes with determination. “I meant you can go off to the lycans and work all you want. I’ll take care of Maximus, just like I did last night.”

“I’m sure you will,” I snorted, but then her expression twisted into something that almost looked like fear.

“I’m sorry, Luna! That was so rude of me! I should watch my words. You’re right; I’m just worthless trash!” Tears filled her eyes again as she bowed her head, exposing her neck in a submissive gesture.

I stared, completely shocked. What was she doing? There were no witnesses here. But then I felt the pack’s chef entering the kitchen. The woman glanced at us, her eyes widening as she took in the scene, then muttered an apology and rushed out.

Did Becca sense her before I did? Was that even possible? Did losing Aila weaken my senses?
