I pushed those worries aside. This wasn’t the time to think about that.
“Seriously?” I set down my coffee cup, feeling the frustration bubble up inside me. This was getting ridiculous.
“It’s nothing personal,” Becca said as she stood up. “A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.”
Then, without warning, she slammed her head onto the table with a sickening crack. I gasped, shocked.
“What are you—” I choked on my words as she lifted her head, smiling with blood streaming down her face. She’d shattered a plate, and pieces of glass were sticking out of her skin.
Who was this woman? Some kind of monster?
“You’re insane!” I hissed.
“On the contrary,” Becca smirked, “I’m the sanest person you’ll ever meet.”
With that, she hurled herself through the French windows, shattering the glass and tumbling into the garden.
I stood there, stunned, realizing just how deep in trouble I was now. Dean was rushing over with a worried look, a few others trailing behind him.
A loud growl echoed nearby, and I recognized Maximus’s voice instantly.
He was the first to reach Becca, who was now bleeding from several cuts, looking genuinely injured.
“It was my fault,” she whimpered loudly, making sure everyone could hear her. “All my fault. I was too... too... disrespectful. The Luna didn’t want to—”
Maximus’s head snapped in my direction immediately, his eyes filled with accusation.
I sat frozen, feeling the weight of everyone's stares pressing down on me. They were all waiting for some kind of reaction, but I had to stay calm, quickly thinking of what to do next.
“Alpha, she’s bleeding badly!” Dean knelt beside Becca, his voice urgent. “She needs to get to the hospital! She’s an omega and can’t heal fast.”
“I will be... fine.” Becca sighed heavily, like even breathing was a struggle.
Maximus’s eyes burned with anger as he stared at me, as if he could pierce through me with his glare.
“How could you do this?” he growled, his eyes glowing red, his wolf trying to push through. Did his wolf want to attack me? Or were they struggling for control because Maximus was being so irrational? I always thought I had a good relationship with his wolf, but now, with his mate involved, I wasn’t so sure.
“Did you hear me say anything like that?” I asked.
“No, Luna,” Maggie replied truthfully.
“That’s because I didn’t,” I added, shrugging. “One minute, she was fine, and the next, she went completely off. There are definitely some mental conditions that could explain that.”
The room went silent, and I couldn’t tell if my defense was working or not.
“For Goddess’s sake!” Ava exclaimed, bursting in through the back door with Will right behind her, looking worried. “You’ve known our Luna for years! It’s ridiculous to think she’d do something like this! She’s always been the most level-headed person around, even during rogue attacks!”
“She’s right,” someone mumbled from the back. “Our Luna is better than this.”
“Exactly! Even if she had the right to beat this omega, she wouldn’t stoop that low!”
I felt a bit of relief as I leaned back in my chair. The tension in the room eased a bit.
“Also,” I continued, “I’m an Alpha by blood. If I had thrown her through these windows, she’d have gone much farther. And there’s no way my scent is on her, just like none of hers is on me. Do I really need to go on?”
