“Exactly!” Ava added, hands on her hips, standing behind me. “Look at how quickly her wounds are healing. Is she even an omega? We know next to nothing about this woman! An omega would take days to heal from something like this!”
I found myself standing, walking over to Maximus and Rebecca. Feeling cornered, Rebecca began to cry again.
“They’re right,” she muttered, “I hit my face on the table myself. And I broke the glass myself. I did it all myself. It’s not Luna’s fault. I’ll never go against Luna again! I swear.”
I clenched my fists. Here she was, playing the victim again, implying that it was my fault despite all the evidence to the contrary. This redhead had no limits!
Becca kept crying in Maximus’s arms, but he motioned for Dean to take her, and Dean quickly complied. I could see that Maximus didn’t fully believe her, but at least he had some doubt about Becca. I could tell by the confused look on his face.
“Alpha,” Will interrupted, “I think we can sort this out easily. There’s a hidden camera in here. I installed it a month ago. Everything should be on tape.”
I tensed, turning to Will. If there were cameras here, I would have known. I knew there were none. What was Will up to? Did he want to help or trap me? With our history, I couldn’t be sure.
“Fine, let’s check the footage in my office,” Maximus said, his tone shifting. “Will, put some guards at Becca’s hospital room. No one gets in or out.”
This was puzzling, and I wasn’t sure how to interpret it. Was Maximus protecting Becca, or was this a sign of his distrust?
“Katherine, dear,” he called out, extending a hand toward me, “Come with me. I’m sure this is just a big misunderstanding.”
People behind us looked confused. Still, I was glad I’d won at least this part of the battle.
I chose not to take his hand and walked out of the kitchen on my own. As I left, I noticed how worried Ava looked, seeing her brother holding Becca gently while she clung to him, sobbing. We’d have to talk about that later.
We were silent all the way to Maximus’s office. Once he closed the door behind us, he let out a deep growl.
“What was that, Katherine?” he demanded, looking at me like he was blaming me all over again.
“Care to clarify?” I asked, sitting down in one of the chairs. “Because I’m starting to get a headache.”
“Why didn’t you take my hand in front of everyone when I was trying to protect you?” he snapped. “I didn’t know how to handle it at first, but luckily Will came up with the camera idea. You and I both know there aren’t any! There’s no footage!”
“Considering everything that’s happened, I think we need some time alone,” he said, turning to the window with his hands behind his back. “Maybe a vacation could help us work on our marriage.”
“There’s no need,” I replied. “We’re both too busy to take vacations.”
The thought of being alone with him now made me uneasy. There was nothing left in our marriage to salvage. But I couldn’t say that out loud, not yet.
“That’s the problem,” he chuckled. “Too much work. Maybe I should lighten your load. Ava could help you with some paperwork.”
“She will,” I agreed, feeling I had to compromise on something. Alphas needed that.
“Speaking of work, I don’t think going to the Lycan kingdom for a week is a good idea.”
This wasn’t good. I needed to go there. I needed to see Jacob—not just for work, though I told myself that was the reason.
“How exactly do you plan to tell the Lycan king we’re backing out after we’ve already agreed?” I challenged, trying to hide my true feelings. “I’m not making that call!”
