His expression shifted as if he’d been struck by lightning, and he looked down.
“Yes, Luna,” he admitted quietly.
“It’s okay,” I said, patting his shoulder. “I understand. You can’t go against your Alpha’s orders.”
“If I could…” he started, but I silenced him with a finger to his lips.
“It doesn’t matter,” I shrugged. “At least I’ll always have your support, right?”
“Always, Luna,” he said, his breath heavy. Something was different about him, but I couldn’t quite place it.
“Then, of course, I’ll be fine,” I said with a small laugh and headed inside. I needed to figure out what to do next.
Once in my bedroom, I knew Maximus wouldn’t come back tonight. He wasn’t with Becca yet, but he spent his nights drinking alone in his office, probably reflecting on his choices. In the morning, he’d bring me flowers, gifts, maybe even an apology. But Becca would still be in the picture.
After a long bath, I sat at my desk and pulled out an old journal. I hadn’t used it in years, but now it seemed like the perfect place to document everything that was about to happen. The events that would lead to my death.
I tried to recall every detail while I still could.
The game had begun.
My plan was simple. Since I couldn’t change the main event or get rid of Becca, I had to leave. But not without my pack, and not without ensuring my friends were safe. I also needed to expose Becca for who she really was. Everyone thought she was an angel, but I knew better. If she became Luna, it would spell disaster for the pack.
Though my heart yearned for revenge, I couldn’t let my life’s work be destroyed. I didn’t hate everyone, just those who betrayed me, who promised respect and protection but gave me nothing but humiliation and suffering. Those were the ones I’d focus on.
The door opened suddenly, and Maximus walked in, forcing me to quickly hide the journal. Luckily, he didn’t notice.
His face was full of guilt. I wanted to roll my eyes but held back. This hadn’t happened before. In my past life, he hadn’t visited me that night. This was new, and I needed to be careful.
“Kat,” he said, stepping further into the room, “Will told me about the intruder. Are you okay?”
“Let’s not speak of it,” I interrupted. “It is what it is.”
“Kat, Baby,” he murmured, nuzzling my neck where he’d marked me years ago, binding our wolves together and claiming me as his mate. “I hurt you, and I’ll do anything to fix that.”
Not everything. I knew that all too well.
“Only you can be my Luna; you know that, right?” He started kissing my neck, trying to unzip my dress.
This felt strange. We hadn’t been intimate for a while. Our paths had diverged over half a year ago. I was his abandoned, rejected wife.
“No!” I exclaimed, turning to face him. “Not today.” Or ever. He had his chance, and he blew it. I didn’t want him anymore. If my wolf Aila were here, she’d be howling in pain, bound as she was to Maximus’s wolf, Axel. But I couldn’t feel Aila now. I was free from her influence, and I was furious.
I didn’t show it, though. My mother had taught me well to hide my emotions. Finally, that training was paying off.
“Kat?” Maximus looked at me in shock. We were happy together, once. This reminded me that he’d probably been with Becca for days, maybe weeks, lying to me all the while. “Honey, don’t do this. I love you, and we’re a family. We’ll always be a family.”
