“Believe it or not, I’m not feeling well after everything today,” I said, meeting his gaze. “But it would make me happy if you brought me the intruder’s head.”
He nodded quietly. “Anything for you, Kat.”
He brushed my cheek, and I tolerated it, even forced a smile for the sake of appearances.
“You’ll have his head in the morning,” he promised before leaving me alone.
Ava tried to reach out mentally, but I asked her to wait until morning.
After a sleepless night, I knew what I had to do and what my first step would be.
In my office, I dialed the number no other werewolf would dare to call. I had no other choice.
“Hello, Beta Richard speaking,” an annoyed voice answered.
“Hello, Beta. This is Luna Katherine Grimm.”
He didn’t recognize the name.
“And?” he asked, sounding bored.
“Seven years ago, I saved your nephew from a rogue attack at his boarding school. You gave me this number and told me you owed me one.”
He paused.
“So, you’re calling to collect?” he chuckled. “And here I thought there were still selfless people in the world.”
“I wouldn’t ask if lives didn’t depend on it,” I replied. Lycans were hard to reach, and mingling with regular werewolves was rare for them. But I’d been lucky once before.
“Fine,” he agreed. “What do you need?”
“I need to speak to the Lycan Alpha King,” I said firmly.
“Bold, aren’t we?” The Beta’s chuckle left me unsure of how to respond. “Do you really think the King will do whatever I tell him?”
“I’m hoping he respects you enough to do this small favor,” I replied, biting my lip. I was definitely walking on thin ice, and I knew it.
But I didn’t have a choice.
“Fine,” the man grunted softly. For the first time, I wondered what he was doing. “Emma, dear, that’s enough. I need to go.”
“Hello, your majesty,” I addressed him formally, despite my doubts. “My name is Katherine Grimm. I’m the Luna of the Silver River pack.”
Silence. It unnerved me, but I remembered I only had five minutes with him.
“I need your help,” I began. “My husband is Alpha Maximus Grimm, and we’re planning to divorce soon.”
“Fascinating,” he replied flatly. “But what does that have to do with me? You can divorce whenever you want without my help.”
“I know, Alpha,” I agreed, hearing a slight growl. “That’s not why I’m asking for your help. You see, we are chosen mates. When we got married, we merged our packs. I want your help to reclaim my people and my territory. As the Alpha King, when I bring this dispute to the Alpha Council, your word will be final. They won’t be able to refuse.”
“Hmm,” he sounded amused, “And you think it will go that far? The Alpha Council is made up of male alphas. What makes you think they’ll support you?”
“They will if they know you’re on my side,” I said, feeling a surge of confidence. “I’ve proven myself as a leader and a warrior. This shouldn’t be an issue.”
“Then maybe you don’t need my help at all?” He chuckled.
“I do, your Majesty,” I insisted, “I really do. And I would truly appreciate it.”
“This is a complex matter,” he said after a pause. “Not something I’d decide over the phone. Honestly, it doesn’t sound serious enough to bother with.”
