I felt anger rising within me. Was he serious? Was that it?

“But…”

“There’s nothing more to discuss. You got married and handed over your pack. You didn’t think it through, and now it’s too late. He’ll owe you generous alimony according to our laws. You can maintain your luxurious lifestyle if that’s what you’re worried about—”

“It’s not about that!” I gritted my teeth. “I can’t leave my people with them!”

“Them?” The king scoffed. “So, this is the problem. He found someone else, and you’re bitter?”

This was pointless. I slammed my fist on the desk, almost breaking it. This kind of mockery wasn’t new to me. I’d heard it all before, even from those who claimed to be my friends.

“I am not bitter!” I spat out, furious. “I’m angry because I see how flawed our system is! How unfairly women are treated when a man no longer stands by their side! How few chances do we get to prove ourselves? Sure, you’ll make a woman a warrior and talk about equality, but when it comes to higher positions, you’ll make her work three times harder than any man just to be considered! I’ve been doing an Alpha’s job for years alongside my husband, and I’ve done it flawlessly. But all you see now is a wounded woman who can’t get over her husband’s betrayal. Yes, it hurts like hell, but here I am, not wallowing in pain but figuring out my next move. You don’t even know what’s happening, but you’ve already judged me. What a disappointing introduction to my king!”

I threw my phone across the room, watching as it shattered against the wall.

What a joke!

Jacob sat in his leather chair, staring at his Beta’s phone. What just happened? Did she really scold him and then hang up?

“O-kay.” Richard carefully retrieved his phone. “That went well.”

“Remind me who that was?” Jacob asked, frowning.

“What?” Richard laughed nervously. “Before I tell you, are you going to kill her or—”

“RICHARD!” Jacob’s growl was so loud it probably echoed through the entire pack.

“Fine!” The Beta dropped into the chair across from him. “She’s the Luna of the Silver River pack.”

Silver River… not far from Silver Lake.

“What else?” the king tapped his fingers impatiently on the desk.

“Her name is Katherine Grimm. If I remember correctly, she’s been a Luna for five or six years. Maybe seven.”

“You said you owed her,” Jacob’s gaze bore into Richard. “How so? Is she one of your many flings?”

“Of course not!” The Beta sounded offended. “She saved Tyler seven years ago. Rogues attacked his boarding school, and she happened to be there for an event. She wasn’t a Luna yet, but she was preparing for the role.”

I almost bumped into Ava at the door.

“Kat,” she greeted me with a forced smile, but I could tell she was nervous. “How about we eat here and chat? Just the two of us?”

I smiled back. Ava was trying to shield me from the harsh reality waiting downstairs. But I was ready for whatever came my way.

“Maybe another time,” I suggested, taking her hand. “Right now, I need to do something. Just stay by my side, okay?”

“Always.” Ava’s eyes glistened with tears.

The dining room was buzzing with activity, but as soon as I stepped inside, the noise died down. Becca, on her first day in the pack, was already seated at the table with the highest-ranked wolves, clearly the center of attention.

“Luna!” She jumped to her feet, as if letting me see her triumph in taking over my territory. “P-please, forgive my rudeness! I know my place!”

Here we go again.

Goddess, how I hated her. Becca looked at me with those huge doe eyes, shaking slightly to add drama to her manipulative act. She always did this. Every encounter with her was a performance.
