"Normally, it's easier to control yourself once you start from a young age because as you know, werewolves don't shift until they're five. Due to their young age, the full moon doesn't have much of a strong effect on them because most kids aren't affected by negative emotions as yet. They're still innocent. As they age, the effect of the full moon becomes stronger but at the same time, by gradually being exposed to the full moon, they're able to adapt and control their emotions much better. These new wolves, however, doesn't have that luxury. They're already late teenagers and adults with little to no experience of dealing with their wolves so their barely suppressed emotions will cause them to lose control and shift. This curse was meant to punish us, meaning the full moon is the sign that tells us that we need to slaughter everyone and anything in our paths no matter who or what it is."
"So... since children are innocent, they're not tainted with this urge to slaughter until they get older but by then the moon's effect has already been dulled?" I asked.
"Exactly. Which is why the full moon isn't necessarily a threat to most packs anymore unless something unexpected happened, like for us. We have to do this the hard way. The one thing that can snap a wolf out of their crazed state on a full moon is to exhaust themselves. Once they become exhausted, their minds begin to clear. Look."
I looked back out at the crowd as he directed and noted that the ones who were leaning close to death's doors were healing at a speed visible to the eye but the crazed look in their glowing eyes were slowly fading as they came to their senses. A few had already trotted off into a corner to lay down and rest their weary limbs and lick their wounds.
My eyes glistened with fascination.
A few teens were knocked unconscious as they challenged the elders in order to get to their mates while others were beaten to the point where their wolves became disfigured. There were also a few who crashed into my barrier a few times, in an attempt to run away but those ones were quickly knocked down and dealt with.
There were even some who grew balls and targeted us up on the podium. Abel, Axil, Dawson and Ryder took turns to subdue them while I occasionally blew them away whenever they got close to Liza and I.
What terrified me was the insane look in their glowing eyes as they charged at us with their injured bodies and broken limbs. It was like nothing else mattered to them besides tearing us apart.
Liza had long since clung to my arm as we stood together, refusing to take one foot off of the podium.
The moon now hung high in the sky as darkness blanketed the entire town. Our only source of light being the lampposts that were scattered around the square, adding to the spooky effect of their glowing eyes as they charged at us.
"Tomorrow night, me, you and the guys. We are definitely going out to enjoy ourselves. We need a break from all this crazy," Liza breathed from beside me as she stared out with wide eyes at the chaos.
I snorted, "you? need a break? I thought you loved this kind of excitement."
She rolled her eyes, "Everyone needs a break eventually stupid."
"Your mother."
"Your Father."
"Your mother's uncle nephew niece's grandmother."
"Your whole family!"
"You trust that elder with her!?" Liza asked.
"Of course. Ms. Diamond and a few others were chosen personally by the Alpha to look after the kids under five to keep them safe from this chaos."
"Axil chose her?" I asked in surprise, not having heard any of this until now.
Dawson nodded, "Yes, he picked the eldest of us all who has the most restraint and is good with children."
"Ah," I nodded in understanding then turned to call out to Axil, "Ax."
He glanced across at me curiously.
"Now that things are settling down, are we supposed to stand here all night?"
He glanced over at Abel who answered, "I brought a few sleeping bags for us to sleep on, though I doubt any of us will be sleeping besides you and Liza."
