Angela felt his heavy stare on her. She refused to look up and risk meeting his deep eyes. She kept her bowed down, her eyes on her lap as she held the phone to her ear eagerly waiting to hear the voice she called. Her leg had began to quiver anxiously when a muffled 'hello' sounded from the speakers. An instant grin appeared on her face from ear to ear. "Hey. Hey, it's me. Yes, I'm fine. I'm okay. Don't worry about me." Her face turned suddenly serious. "Listen, I'm going to be away for a while. I need a favour... Yea? You'd do that for me? Yes, please, thank you. I'll see you soon. I promise I will."
Angela heard Steven huff as she declared her promise. She didn't care. She would see them again. Somehow. Someday.
As soon as she hung up, Steven snitched the phone from her. "Who was that?" He questioned with a hint of irritation in his voice and... curiosity?
Knowing that even if she didn't tell him he had means to easily find out, she didn't even bother to lie to him. "That was Tony's mum."
"You should have told her you're not going to be seeing her son ever again instead of that promise."
Angela faced him squarely with her chin up and her flared nostrils. "The minute you and my father sign those merger papers, you'll have nothing to threaten me with. Nothing will keep me from leaving here then. Not even you."
And she scurried into the bathroom and locked herself in. A few seconds later, she heard a door closing with a bang. Steven must have left the room.
She let out a deep sigh. And another. Her body felt stiff with all the events that had happened that day. Steven had been thoroughly infuriating.
Without wasting another second on another thought, she turned on the tap and filled the bath with hot water.
Angela hastened her step down the street, checking behind her every ten seconds. She expected Steven would have made someone follow her. But no one was there.
She had waited until Steven had went to sleep before she had stealthily unlocked her bedroom door and sneaked her way to the elevator and past the concierge till she was standing on the pavement outside.
It was after twenty minutes of nearly jogging down the streets that she found what she went out searching for.
Angela got inside the telephone booth, feed one of the few coins she had in her pocket into the machine and dialed. Within a few seconds, she was answered with an anxious call of her name.
"Hello, Grace. Sorry, I'm calling this late." Angela spoke into the receiver.
When Angela had told Steven that she missed nothing of her life back there, she lied. She had missed the good food.
On the first morning at Steven's place, she was woken up by the delicious smell of toast and bacon. Angela nearly tumbled out of bed in excitement and joy and it was only when she reached the door that she realized she was only wearing a tee shirt. Steven's very large tee shirt. She didn't have any clothes to sleep in and it was the only garment she had found in the room. Desperate time, desperate measure, she countered. She pulled the hem of the shirt to her knees and looked at herself in the mirror. The image reflecting back to her brought memories of the hundreds of times she had woken up in Steven's clothes. And just like the past, she wore nothing underneath that shirt.
As soon as Steven caught sight on Angela in his clothing, he gulped the orange juice he just sipped at once. Goodness, his shirts always seemed to look better on her than on himself.
"Still the same breakfast menu?" Angela stated as she seated opposite Steven and instead of drooling at the close up view of his naked torso, she focused on surveying the plate he had prepared for her. There was toast, eggs, baked beans and bacon.
"Always." Steven muttered in between bites. "It's my daily cheat meal."
"And somehow you still look good." She gestured her hand to his exposed chest. Why would he bother wearing a shirt when he looked like that?
Steven paused the fork of beans mid-way to his mouth. One eyebrow rose. "You think I look good, huh?"
