"Ah, man he's gonna kill you if he ever survives this." Devin chuckled after he and Scott sobered up.
"Yeah. But at least I have a sparring partner for later."
"True."
"Sage!"
We all turned to see Charlie sprinting towards us.
"We found it! We know where he is!" I looked to Scott and Devin and they both had knowing look on their faces.
"I'll get the rest of the guys," Devin said before shifting off into the woods. Scott and I then headed to meet his father.
"We were covering the northwest side when some of Jason's accomplices attacked. There were a lot of them around that area so I knew we were getting close. They all ran off but we managed to get a hostage, and Liam wasted no time with compassionate interrogation. Luckily, the guy wasn't much of a masochist."
Huh? So I guess Dad wasn't getting soft after all.
"So where we heading?" I asked.
"New York."
This feeling right now was so exhilarating. I'm going to see her again. I'll finally get to hold in my arms like I've always wanted, to stare into to chocolate brown eyes, to kiss those soft lips. I'll make sure no one takes her away from me again, I'll never let anyone have her. No matter how much she doesn't want me around she'll just have to grow to love because I'm never letting her go. She's mine and I'll make sure she remembers that.
'Yo sage,' Mike said through the link. 'the rest actually would appreciate you not sending everything your feeling our way!' I then heard a few barks in agreement.
'Sorry, I said sheepishly. 'I kinda forgot you guys for a sec.' I heard a few gasped in outrage. Mainly just my friends.
'Even me!' Ethan said.
'Yes, mostly you.'
'Well!'
'Guys can we just focus on the mission! We can play who's Sage's least favorite later!' Nichole's voice rang through.
'Nichole, what are you doing here?' Scott said before I could even say a word. 'I told you not to come! It could get dangerous.'
I just went for staring at the wall. I felt like the coldest girl alive when I thought about what I said to him. How he must have felt when I told him I can't accept him.The hurt...
"For someone that just saw a werewolf, you're taking this better than I thought. Or is it just the shock?"
I chuckled lightly at that. "Just thinking," I said.
Why do I have to be so hard-headed all the time? I don't like this feeling, the guilt, the ignorance. I hate it! I want it to go away. I just-I want to scream, to cry, to just be left alone. This panging in my chest must be what he felt when he thought he messed things up. When I pushed him away.
"I can't take it back," I whispered, knowing I didn't have explained anything to her.
"Hanna, it's okay," she reassured. "It's only natural for you to react that way. But you're his mate so he'll forgive you in a heartbeat."
And that's when I realized, that that one word caused this all. That word everyone kept referring to me as. Mate. What the hell is a mate anyway? I've been hearing that word thrown around here like nobody's business, so it must mean something.
"What's a mate?" I asked. A light blush attacked her cheeks and she cleared her throat.
What's so bad about it that it got her embarrassed? She was the one who wanted to be Sage's.
