In this standout chapter of the Internet novel New Wolf, Shea introduces new challenges, powerful emotions, and major plot progress that captivate readers from beginning to end.

I slowly pulled away from her clutches, being mindful not to wake her. Immediately the feeling of coldness burnt my skin. Ignoring it, I quickly got dress and left the room, but not without taking another glance at her all snuggled up in my sheets. I smiled at the sight. It amazes me how someone like her can cause so many problems. She was too innocent, too pure in my eyes. But she was worth the trouble. I'd kill again if I have to, for her sake.

As soon as I descended the stairs, I was attacked by Toby (as usual). But this time, instead of telling me about some 'incredibly awesome spectacular' adventure, I was met with his river of tears. That's a first. I bent down to his level and ruffled his hair.

"What's wrong little man?"

"I-is it, is it true about Anna? Is she hurt really bad?" he rubbed his eyes. I sent him a crooked smile. How do explain this him? I can't just tell him she got battered up and traumatized. It'd probably crush the poor kid.

"She got hurt but she'll be okay, don't worry."

"Are you sure?"

"Toby, she's fine," I assured.

"But..." his bottom lip began to quiver and eventually, I sighed in defeat.

"Fine. You can go check on her if you want but don't wake her." I commanded.

"Yay!"

Immediately his face lit up and he hugged me. Which seemed weird, because he was only tall enough to reach my thighs. I watched him in his efforts to skip as many stairs as he could to get there faster. If he could barely walk up the stairs on a normal day, I don't see how trying to skip one or two would be any better. Unless he plans to climb all the way up there, the chances of him getting there faster had now been reduced by twenty percent.

Making sure he made it up the stairs without breaking his neck, I headed towards the kitchen to find my mother whipping up a feast.

"What's with buffet, Mom?"

"Well, since everyone's going to be here soon, I might as well feed them while they're here. And knowing your friends, it's going to take a lot to scarf down their throats before they're full."

"I guess, but you should probably make mine to go."

"Going to the hospital?"

"Yeah," I said grabbing my car keys from the counter. "somebody's gotta suffer with him."

"Yeah...about that..."

I quirked an eyebrow at her nervous expression. "What do you mean about that?"

"Well, considering that he has a lot of broken ribs, a punctured lung and lost a lot of blood, he's as good as dead."

I gulped loudly at that. Scott could die? He might not be with us very soon and it's my fault.

"But..." she sang. "since I'm the amazing doctor you all know and love, he'll be just fine." she said nonchalantly.

"What?" I gasped.

"Sage, he's a werewolf, not to mention soon to be Beta, he won't go down so easy."

"Then why didn't you tell me that before?"

"Haven't you heard of bad news before good news, I was trying to brighten your mood!"

"Mission accomplished." I shook my head, walking off. It's good to know he won't be in a box floating down the river soon. I guess that's one less thing to worry about.

I took the elevator to the third floor and counted down the door numbers until I met the one I wanted. Before I could reach the knob, the door flew open by itself and I would have considered this place haunted if it weren't for Nichole on the other side.
