I cupped his little cheeks, forcing him to look at me. "I'm fine and I'm not dying, I promise."

Suddenly, I saw his eyes widen in horror. "Holy moly!"

I shot up immediately with him in my arms. "What?"

"You...your face! It looks so beat up and stuff! Why would he do that to you, you're so nice and have pretty hair! Mommy said guys aren't supposed to hit girls so he did something bad! But don't worry, I'll get my big brother to beat up for you! He'll teach him a lesson." I watch amusingly as he attempted to pull me off the bed. His brows furrowed in a determination that only the Fischer boys can make look adorable.

"I don't think that would be necessary."

"Why not?" he said an innocent look on his face.

"Because Sage already took care of the bad man! I was wondering where you ran off to for so long." Came a merry voice that now entered the room. I knew who it was, though. Her voice was soft and light, comforting. But I knew she was more than she looked.

"I wanted to see if Anna was okay," he said, climbing off my bed and then into his mother's arms. "She said she's fine but her face looks like it hurt." he pouted. I saw her look to me and then to Toby.

"Hey, why don't you go eat breakfast with Dad, mmm? I made pancakes..."

"Does it have chocolate chips in there?"

"Yep."

"Yay!" He wiggled from his mother's grasp to the floor and then shot through the door. "You better save some for me, dad!" I heard his faint voice going down the stairs. After the small pattering of his feet ceased, Emily turned to me, still she remain quiet.

"I feel like this is just the beginning," I spoke. "I feel like there something else to come, something greater than this. But I don't want it. I want nothing of it."

"I understand what you might be going through but you shouldn't give up on everything like that."

"No, you don't understand," I said sharply, she looks taken aback. I knew I beginning to get bitchy at this point but I can't help it when it starts. I pulled my knees to my chest and looked at her directly, though some of my calmness had returned. "No disrespect, Mrs. Fischer, but you know nothing. You know nothing about me, you don't know what I've been through, you don't know what it feels like to keep starting over again and again. To try and pretend none of it ever happened. And I hate this! I hate my life so much! It's just one disaster after another! First, my mother left before I could even remember her face, then, my dad dies and now, this!" I sobbed, burying my face in my arms. "What did I do that was so bad? Why did this have to happen to me?" I whispered.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know." I felt her hand on my shoulder.

"Hey, it's a small town. Things spread. And like I said before, call me Emily."

"Okay..." I opened my mouth to say something else but closed it.

"What? What is it?"

"No, It's nothing," I mumbled. It's not really important..."

"No tell me!" she smiled, curiosity shining in her eyes.

"Alright." I sighed. "So I was wondering...why did Sage...pick me as his mate?" I blushed. "I mean, he could have anyone he wants. Judging from what I've seen, he practically has all the girls at school crawling all over him. So why pick me? I barely know him and it scares me how he's telling me all these things and I actually

believe him. I know called him a liar and made it seemed like I didn't care but I was afraid of everything about him. I barely know him, so what can I possibly give to him that he wants? I hurt him and I didn't mean to, but it was all too much."

"Hanna, people don't choose who their mates will be, their mates are chosen for them." She clarified.
