Toby
"Where's Toby?" I suddenly asked, breaking the tense silence. They look at me as if I was crazy and soon began to doubt themselves when they realized he was indeed, not with them.
"He was right next to me..." Stella said in disbelief. "What the hell?"
"He's probably downstairs-" Katelynn tried to reassure, but I shook my head, cutting her off.
"No," I said. "I was the last person to come up. Toby was not there."
"What the hell is going on?" Charlie groaned. "First something happened to Sage? And now Toby?"
"One of you guys stay with Sage, preferably Jess, and call Jen over to look at him," Scott said. "And call Emily and Liam and tell them to come home now.The rest of us can go look for Toby."
Everyone nodded in agreement at Scott's orders, but it was as if they were somewhere else. Scott had always seemed like a natural born leader to me, and this was just one of his moments. He and Sage just had that thing about them in dangerous situations, which probably had to do with the fact that they're wolves.
Wolves
Never in a million year did I ever thought I would use that word in a person's description. Before all I witnessed, you could have killed me if you wanted, call me a martyr, but I would have never believed.
And now?
"Hanna? Why don't you come with me?" Scott spoke, pulling me from my thoughts. I stared at him for a while before my legs acted. His eyes held something else than his tone.
He was perplexed.
I then knew that his request meant something more.
"Just say it." I sighed.
We spent I good while searching every inch of the rooms in the guest hall, just hoping that he'd pop out, yet, nothing. Scott kept looking at me like I wasn't telling him something, and I was just waiting for him to just ask me already.
"I just need some answers." he ran a hand through his hair, which was already tousled enough due to the repetition of that action. "What exactly happened after Sage pulled you in the room? I want every detail."
Immediately, my cheeks fiercely took on the shade of a tomato and I tried to say something, but quite frankly, I wished the ground would just open up a swallow me. How do I explain to him what we were doing most of the time in the room, and in detail!
I can't just say, "You know, we were just talking, and then we were sucking each other's faces off like it was the air we need, and the next thing I knew we were on the bed desperately peeling the clothes off our backs, secretly hoping we'd finally get to scratch that restive itch, but we were back to talking again, then Sage was acting loopy and he started to look like Death himself."
"It doesn't work like that Hanna." he laughed. "Our wolf comes to us when we shift, which is known to you as us turning into big hairy dogs- yeah, Sage told me." he said matter-of-factly.
"I sincerely apologize for that misinterpretation," I said automatically.
"Forgiven. -but" he said returning to the point. "that only comes about when we turn 12. So if we depended on that, Toby has a lot of years ahead of him."
I sighed in agony and directed my gaze to the window. I dragged a finger along the foggy glass, snippets of the outside becoming visible. It was when I began making shapes that I noticed something moving on the other side. I rubbed my fingers along the smooth surface and I saw a small silhouette exiting the woods. Curiosity seemed to have taken over and in found myself actively wiping the window clear. And what I saw was unmistakable.
Toby
My body swung into action and I threw the window up, crawling out. I couldn't waste time going down stairs, it was too far, and he was running exactly to where I was.
"What are you doing!" I heard Scott yell. "Do you have any idea how cold it is!"
I didn't answer him. I didn't even acknowledge that I heard him. I just kept running, and running, and running.
I suppose the situation kind of hit close to home because somehow I found myself tearing up. Just the thought of losing someone else terrified me. Toby was too, pure, too young, too...innocent.
