"What if," Charlie started. "one of us turns him?"
They all turn to him and then to Jen curiously.
"I don't know." she shrugged. "It's a fifty-fifty shot."
"Like?"
"If one of you bite him and he turns, then he'll be fine. But if the opposite happens and he doesn't start to change in less than a minute, not only will he die instantly, but so will the person that bit him."
A heavy silence drilled the room as they all stared at each other. Not wanting to die, was the nature of everything. Trying leaving a withering plant next to sunlight. That plan will grow and move in the direction of the sun. But that flower could dry up before it completes the trip and no one wanted to suffer such fate.
"I'll do it." volunteered Sage, and I found myself enraged. At this I did not quietly watch, I made my presence known. There is no way in hell is he's doing that.
"No," I said and they all turned to me. Sage's jaws locked when he saw me, obviously not pleased.
"Hanna. I told you to stay in the room."
"You don't know what you're dealing with!" I blurted out. "Jacob knew he was going to die! He said they'd make sure of it!"
"What are you talking about?" he looked at me incredibly.
"I bet they're even watching us right now! I bet they want you to bite him so I'd be unprotected!"
"You're not making any sense Hanna."
"Don't you see? It's me they want! It's me. It's-" I curtly paused, my face mortifying into something resembling bittersweetness. I can't believe I just figured this out. Jacob said something that only my father ever said to me, "go home."
Just go home. If you ever get lost you need to go home.
He spoke those words to me right before he got sick and I never understood them. When my father said home, he wasn't referring to the place where one resides, he meant the safe house. He only took me there twice and the second time was to make sure I remembered where it was. But I never went inside; he forbade me. He said he hoped I would never have to make a third trip because he won't be able to stop me from opening the doors. And now I know why.
He knew he was going to die.
"It is you."
The voice was gentle, so cautious. The familiarity about it peaked my interest and I found myself turning to see the owner.
I took at step back when I was her face.
It was the woman from earlier.
"You have got to be kidding me?" I abruptly cut him off. I looked at the woman before me, who apparently is said to be my mother. And as I examined her, I finally understood where I got my eyes from, my features, my personality, because I barely took after my father. "You're my mother?"
"I don't think we should do this here." she said.
"No. Anything you have to say to me, you can say it in front of all of us."
She chuckled. "You really are my daughter."
I swallowed hard. "Well to me you're just a stranger."
Her face fell. "It wasn't as easy as you think. Leaving the two of you was the hardest thing I ever did."
"You seem to be doing fine, though."
She pressed her lips together and it kind of reminded me of myself. "Since the wereworld is no longer a secret from you, I'm sure you know what mates are. After you were born, I was mated to a wolf. It was probably the most unfortunate thing that could happen at the time. Max and I were on the run and we were trying to keep you hidden. Things back then were too dangerous and if anyone found out about you, we'd all be murdered. But Kyle was willing to take the risk. I loved your father, I really did. But there are some things you have to set free and he was willing to give me up for your sake. I left you with Max because I knew they'd follow me and they did. The reason you and you father kept moving around was because they found you and I had to keep slowing them down. I had to make sure you were always safe. I never left you, Hanna."
I glared at her. "So where were you when Dad was dying? When he died?"
"I was there too. I was the nurse that was trying to restrain you. I wanted to make sure you weren't alone when he died. You're father knew that once the poison reached his blood, he was dead."
