He exhaled deeply through his nostrils, and I knew I had won this round.

“Fine,” he grunted, standing up, “but you will go with Will. He’s going anyway since he’s the pack’s Beta.”

“Now you’re sucking the fun out of his life too?” I chuckled. “I’m sure he has a girl to escort and impress.”

“He’s already agreed to be your plus one,” Maximus informed me. “He’ll protect you there as well.”

“How thoughtful,” I remarked, deciding to go along with it. Getting rid of Will would be easy anyway. He’d see some Alpha’s daughter, and off he’d go.

Maximus prepared to leave but hesitated at the door, turning to look at me once more.

“Kat,” he said when our eyes met, “It’s just a transition period. We’ll get through this, and everything will be fine.”

Lies.

“I will never take another Luna except for you.”

Lies.

“I still love you. It’s just that she had such a hard life, and I’m not a monster. She’s just a sweet girl, and she will never take your place.”

Lies, lies, lies.

“Thank you for affirming me,” I nodded. “I needed to hear that, Max.”

I even forced a smile.

“Look, when the ball is over, let’s take a day off. Just you and me. What do you think?” He suggested suddenly, soothingly, and I looked up at him in surprise. This was new. This hadn’t happened in the past.

“We’ll have to check our schedules,” I managed to respond, stretching my lips into a wider smile. “But it’s a nice idea.”

“Then I’ll see you around?” He suddenly looked relieved, as if he had just rid himself of a burden.

“I am your wife, am I not?” I chuckled, watching his smile fade.

He left, and my phone buzzed with a notification informing me that the dresses should have already arrived.

I paused for a moment. It worried me that he offered a day off together. Was it a good sign or a bad one? I wanted to change the events that had caused so many disasters. However, this particular bit wasn’t in my plans.

In the end, I was late for the fitting when I entered the room filled with the most important females of the pack. Ava was there, along with our friends Anna and Olivia. They greeted me in their usual friendly way. On the other side of the room sat Charlotte and her minions.

She was already doing it, implying that just the sight of her affected me.

And it did. But it was manipulative to bring it up.

“Stay,” I offered, smiling gently, noticing how everyone was watching us. I continued, “You’re going to the ball too, and you need an outfit.”

“I already bought one,” Rebecca mumbled, “From the money you gave me. I got it at H&M.”

One of Charlotte’s minions snorted.

“That won’t do,” I turned and sighed. “You need a dress good enough for your new status.”

“And what is that?” Charlotte couldn’t help but ask, her tone provocative.

“A member of the Silver River pack,” I replied without hesitation. “Look around. What do you like?”

A little sob emerged, followed by a timely sniffle. Everybody turned to see Becca crying.

“This is so sweet!” she whined. “You are such a great Luna to take care of someone like me. I’ve never had such a beautiful dress in my life!”
