“My hands are just itching to cut off his…”

“I got you!” I covered my face with my hands, trying to suppress another outburst of giggles.

“You know what, I have an idea!” Ava exclaimed suddenly. “How about we ask the lycans for help?! This might actually…”

“Been there, done that. Their king is an asshole,” I retorted, rolling my eyes.

“You what?!” Her jaw practically dropped to the floor.

“I had one lycan who owed me a favor, so I asked him to arrange a conversation with his king. You have no idea how arrogant he was!” I explained.

“Worse than Maximus?” Ava chuckled.

“Worse than Maximus,” I confirmed.

“Okay then, what’s next?” The Beta female wasn’t one to give up easily, and that was one of the many reasons we became friends in the first place.

“Simple, really. I need to get the support of as many Alphas as I can,” I exhaled loudly before continuing, “so that when the divorce comes into force, they will give me their votes when I raise the matter in the Alpha Council. And I will.”

“How many do you think will support you?” Ava asked bluntly, pulling out her phone. “You can count on the alphas and packs where my cousins are Betas. I’ll take care of them.”

“Not sure yet, but I know where to strike first.” I tapped my fingers on the cold wood of my desk, waiting for Ava to look up from her phone and give me her full attention.

“Do tell!” She seemed genuinely interested.

“The most important event of the year is just around the corner,” I smirked, “The annual Alpha ball.”

“Kat!” Maximus’s head popped into the doorway of my office just as I was wrapping up a discussion with the headmistress about the pack’s primary school budget. “Do you have a sec?”

“Yes, we’re done here,” I replied, handing the papers to the woman in front of me, who gave me a sympathetic smile. I remembered clearly that she was one of the few who had stood by me until the very end. She was part of the reason I managed to squeeze in a little extra cash for the school.

“Luna, Alpha.” The headmistress bowed and left, leaving me alone with Maximus for the first time in a while. For the past few days, I had been avoiding him at all costs. I recalled too well that every meeting in my past life had ended badly. Back then, I tried to keep my dignity and chose not to approach him first. We had meals together with the pack as always and work meetings with the Beta and Gamma, but beyond that, every time Maximus wanted to talk, I found the perfect excuse to escape. There was no point in talking to him—nothing could change. I debated telling him the truth about my rebirth but quickly dismissed the idea. He could easily decide I was crazy and use it against me during the divorce when I tried to take back my pack.

“Oh, really?” I tilted my head. “I wonder when and how that happened?”

“It’s… a long story,” he cleared his throat. “Please understand. My wolf is dying when she’s unhappy. Besides, she’s never been to a ball like this.”

“Oh, my!” I gasped, shaking my head. “Should I take James with me then? He hasn’t seen an event like this either. Come to think of it, neither has Dylan.”

I mentioned the hottest single warriors in the pack on purpose. A growl emerged from Maximus’s chest. Served him right!

“What is it with you lately, Kat?” he looked at me in disbelief. “My Luna will not be going with someone else!”

“Oh, but it’s okay if my Alpha goes with someone else? How is that fair?” I raised my brow, challenging him. Maximus hated being challenged.

“Maybe you should sit this one out then!” He snarled, and for the first time, I felt a twinge of worry. I needed this ball. I needed it badly.

“No, thanks,” I declined, crossing my arms over my chest. “I received my own personal invitation. Besides, it’s important to mingle with other Lunas for the sake of our pack. We still need to organize our student and warrior exchanges and a few mating events for the over eighteens. Or do you expect Becca to handle all that instead of enjoying her first big event? What kind of Cinderella would she be if she had to work again?”
