“That’s very kind of you, Luna,” Ava interjected, unable to stay silent any longer. “Some would even say too kind. I mean, considering—”
“I do what I can,” I countered, sending her a warning look. As always, Ava understood me without words. “Let’s make this clear once and for all. I was very serious about Becca being treated appropriately here. I don’t want anyone to bully her just because the three of us are in a peculiar situation. I wish her no harm and will have zero tolerance for anyone who tries to hurt her.”
With that, I started eating my omelet as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened, stealthily catching glances from my packmates.
There they were—the looks they used to give Becca. Now they were directed at me. Only this time, there was more respect than pity.
Back in the day, I did all the same things. But my mistake was not announcing it in front of everyone. In the end, Becca played them and made them believe I had mistreated her at every chance I got.
I caught Maximus’s gaze and sent a small smile his way, startling him. At least I was getting the exact reactions I wanted. For the first day back, this was pretty good.
Right after breakfast, Ava pulled me into the Luna office and made sure to lock the door properly. The room had sound isolation, so we could talk privately without fear of being overheard.
“What the hell are you doing?” Ava hissed at me. “You’re welcoming his mate?! You should be insisting again and again that he reject her!”
“Oh, Ava,” I sighed, unable to help myself, and hugged her again. She still smelled of almonds, and it made my broken heart feel warm again.
“Stupid perfect Luna! You can’t be this kind!” Ava almost sobbed. “You’ve loved him all your life! He marked you, for Goddess’s sake! What was he thinking?!”
“I know,” I sighed again, stepping away, “But that ship has sailed. No one can fight the mate bond. That battle was lost the moment he met her and didn’t reject her.”
“You’re so calm about it! I can’t believe this!” She shook her head in bewilderment, worry clear on her face.
I thought about it for a few seconds, but deep down, I knew that if I could trust anyone with this secret, it would be the friend who had been by my side since childhood.
“I need to tell you something.” I took Ava’s hands and led her to the armchair, sitting on the edge of my desk. “But I need you to be open-minded about what I’m going to say.”
“I believe in the Moon Goddess,” Ava shrugged. “She may have wanted Maximus to be with someone like Rebecca. But I will never believe she would want such a death for you! Anyone but you!”
“I missed you so much,” I couldn’t help myself and gave Ava another hug. I fell silent for a bit and made myself a promise: no matter what, I would at least save my best friend. I was not going to lose her again.
“So, what’s the plan?” Ava instinctively shifted into battle mode. She was one of the underappreciated wolves. They called her Luna’s assistant, but both of us hated the title. Ava had pure Beta blood and could take down an Alpha if she tried hard enough. Maybe not just any Alpha, but definitely most of them. Some wolves thought too highly of themselves and always underestimated pretty girls.
“The plan is to divorce and take our pack back.” I smiled, knowing I had a great ally on my side now. “The Pearl Moon.”
“Is this even possible?” Ava whistled. “I mean, if you quickly get pregnant with Maximus’s baby and then we kill him, we could get everything…”
“No, thank you.” I burst out laughing. “Goddess, you are so bloodthirsty!”
