It was only later that I'd come to realize that I was the only one prepared for what was to come.
It's time.
The sky was beginning to darken.
Crowds of people kept piling into the square as the full moon began peeking through the clouds. Tension hung high in the air as everyone eyed each other anxiously. There were already a few people who had their eyes glowing, and nails lengthened.
Everyone was on edge.
The effect of the full moon was already beginning.
I glanced at Axil and the others, who stood with Liza and I on the podium, and noticed the indifferent looks that blanketed their faces. It was like they weren't affected at all.
Axil met my gaze and asked over our link, "Are you sure you want to stay for this? It won't be pretty."
I nodded my head firmly, "I have to be inside of the barrier for it to show its full effects. Don't worry, I can protect myself and Liza."
A growl sounded out from below us and I turned my head to the crowd, startled. A man was crouched slightly, eyes glowing and canines glistening threateningly as he growled at another person, "watch where you're fucking going you dunce."
That person snarled and responded, "you ran into me first jackass."
The air got even thicker as a few people started to get a bit riled up. Their temper getting the best of them.
I glanced across at Axil to find him not doing anything to resolve the problems and thus chose to remain silent. There wasn't much else I could do at a time like this. All we could do was urge everyone to gather a bit faster so that we could form this barrier before these people went wild.
A scream tore through the air, and I watched as a female stumbled forward in shock as her now torn dress hung off her body, exposing her white creamy skin.
"Babe?" she stuttered in surprise, hands going up to clutch at herself.
Axil's voice sounded from over me, "hold him down."
At his command, a group of middle-aged men came forward to hold down the teenager as he growled and tried charging after his mate, his glowing eyes zeroing on her neck.
I involuntarily shivered at the strong desire that flared in his eyes.
Axil's hand came to rest on my waist, and I looked up into his eyes curiously.
He explained, "due to his young age and the fact that his mate hasn't been marked yet, his primal urges right now are demanding that he seal the deal and officially make her his."
Liza asked in surprise, "you rape people on a full moon as well!?"
Axil's lips twitched slightly, "not exactly rape... look at the female's eyes."
Axil glanced across at me and nodded, signalling that it was my turn to put up the barrier. I took a deep breath and warned, "this barrier allows people to enter but they can't leave. It's the most effective and drains energy less so you'll still need to keep an eye out for any unexpected incidents."
"Got it. Let's begin."
I took Axil's palm and tapped my finger lightly against it, watching as a dot of blood appeared and trailed onto my hand, absorbing itself into my skin.
I used the podium as the center base of the barrier and knelt down and placed a hand against the wooden surface, feeling my magic boiling inside of me due to the drop of Axil's blood.
I allowed that magic to bubble forward as a stream of hot blood suddenly erupted from my fingertips and dove themselves into the wooden platform beneath us.
"Ashes to ashes
Blood to blood
Surround the masses
Bring forth the flood
Blood rises above all
Yet seeps beneath the feet
